I have a Gould J5S drawing water from a lake, and a plumber recently told me I may need to have the pump rebuilt because the pressure gauge bounces wildly when the pump is running. The pump sounds like it's struggling at the end of the running period before shut-off.
My recollection is that the gauge used to climb smoothly to shut-off (years ago). The gauge and pressure switch are new.
The pump is about 15 years old, but only gets seasonal use in summer. The pump is drained for winter, and always starts up well in the spring after priming.
The motor itself seems fine.
I've done various plumbing and mechanical work successfully, and I'm thinking about rebuilding the pump.
Any suggestions regarding needed parts and tricks? Is there a rebuild kit? Or, does this kind of job require more expert skills.
Thanks!
