Would a smaller pump be better?

I currently have a 1hp deep well jet pump on a 50' well that produces 6-8gpm. I have to use a valve to decrease the output to match the well capacity. I am interested in a new pump (the old one is getting very noisy). Would a smaller pump be more appropriate for this application?

A smaller horsepower pump may be the solution. You will probably have to change out your jet assembly, also.
